Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, has made a startling claim in his forthcoming memoir: that King Charles, then Prince of Wales, told him just days after Diana’s death in 1997 that “we’ll forget her soon enough.”
According to an extract published by the Daily Mail, Spencer says the remark came during a heated phone call after he objected to William and Harry joining their mother’s funeral procession. He recalls Charles erupting in a “stream of anger” before delivering the line — a moment Spencer says left him too stunned to respond beyond hanging up.
Buckingham Palace has responded, saying the King doesn’t comment on books but suggesting that grief may have “clouded” Spencer’s memory of events.
Publishers Penguin Random House have confirmed the quoted passages are accurate. The memoir — expected to be highly critical of the royal family — hits shelves next week, with more excerpts due from the Daily Mail on Thursday.
