A man believed to be a Turkish national in immigration detention escaped from his cell at the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau in Minato Ward on Wednesday and attempted to jump from the 8th floor, threatening suicide, before being persuaded to step back by officials around 4 p.m.
Police said the man escaped from his detention cell at approximately 12:25 p.m. and made his way to an upper floor of the building, where he threatened to jump. After nearly four hours of negotiations, officials talked him down and he was secured without injury.
The incident began when a bureau official placed the detainee in his room around 12:30 p.m., and the escape was noticed shortly afterward. No injuries were reported, and the man remains in custody while authorities investigate the security breach.
