Doug McCain, the eldest son of the late Sen. John McCain, has died suddenly, his sister Meghan McCain announced Sunday. Meghan did not disclose a cause of death but paid tribute to Doug in an emotional message, calling him “a truly wonderful, joyful man” who brought “humor, fun and great conversation to every room.” She said she will always cherish their memories together.
Doug McCain, 66, served for years as a Navy pilot and was part of the McCain military family legacy. He was the son of Carol Shepp, John McCain’s first wife, and was later adopted by the senator after his parents’ marriage in 1965.
He is survived by his wife, Ashley; children Caroline and Shepp; daughters‑in‑law Ellie and Emily; his grandson Teddy; his mother Carol; and other members of the McCain family. Senator John McCain died in 2018 after a battle with brain cancer.
