On Monday, demolition began on a section of the White House East Wing to make way for President Donald Trump’s ambitious $250 million ballroom project. The East Wing, traditionally the operational base for the first lady, is undergoing significant dismantling including the removal of its facade and interior sections. Construction crews were seen tearing down walls and windows across from the Treasury Department.
Trump has long pushed for a large ballroom to replace the current East Room, which holds only around 200 guests. The planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom is designed to accommodate up to 999 guests and will serve as a major venue for grand events and state functions. Trump has asserted the project is privately funded and will not cost taxpayers.
Despite falling short of expected approvals from the National Capital Planning Commission, the demolition and construction are moving forward. The East Wing will also be fully modernized as part of the project, which is expected to be completed before the end of Trump’s term in January 2029. This marks one of the most significant changes to the White House grounds since President Truman’s era.
While supporters praise it as enhancing the White House’s ability to host events, critics view the project as a costly vanity endeavor. Nevertheless, Trump describes the ballroom as an honor to White House tradition and a fulfillment of a long-held presidential desire.
