CCTV shows men dumping body of 24-year-old Ghanaian Joseph Owusu in the Bronx as family demands justice

Posted on November 6, 2026

New details have emerged in the death of 24-year-old Ghanaian Joseph Owusu, whose body was found at a dump site in the Bronx, New York. Surveillance footage shows two people suspected to be adult men removing a large black duffel bag containing his body from the boot of a white saloon car.

GhanaWeb sighted the footage on November 6, 2026. It was shared by American news outlet ABC7.

The video, reportedly recorded overnight, shows the two individuals dragging the bag onto the pavement before driving away. The following day, a different man is seen placing the same bag on a metal stretcher and wheeling it off. Owusu’s body was later discovered at the dump site by a man looking for scrap metal.

ABC7 reported that the medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death. The New York Police Department has also not classified the case as a homicide.

Owusu’s brother, Kojo Yeboah, has appealed for justice, saying the family is struggling to come to terms with the loss. “I need justice for Joseph. I want the truth to come out because my brother didn’t deserve to die the way he did. He’s only 24,” he said.

Yeboah was shown the footage and asked whether he recognised anyone. He said he did not, even after watching it many times. He added that he kept replaying it in the hope that someone who sees it might recognise the men and come forward.

Yeboah described his brother as someone loved by many, with a passion for music. “He would play the piano like hours and hours and just like make sure that he didn’t make a mistake,” he said.

According to the family, Owusu was a devoted church member who served as organist at their church in the Bronx. He also worked as a direct support worker in the homes of people with disabilities and was studying computer science.

How the family learned of his death

The family said they had spoken to Owusu early the previous week and had no reason to suspect anything was wrong, so they had not reported him missing. They were preparing to attend a vigil for 15-year-old Ghanaian Javits Frimpong, who was also killed in the Bronx, when NYPD officers arrived at their home and told them Owusu had been killed.

Yeboah said the family is struggling, especially his mother. “I’m just trying to stay strong for my mom because my mom is going through it,” he said.

The Ghanaian government has also said it is seeking justice in the case.
