Brazilian Fitness Influencer Drowns During Ironman Swim in Texas

Authorities in Texas are investigating the death of a woman who multiple reports identified as Brazilian fitness influencer Mara Flávia Araujo after she drowned during the swimming portion of an Ironman triathlon over the weekend.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said in a Saturday Facebook post that a participant in the Ironman event in The Woodlands drowned while taking part in the swim leg. Firefighters pulled the woman from Lake Woodlands, and the sheriff’s office said major crime detectives were at the scene as part of the investigation.

Although officials did not initially release the participant’s identity, Brazilian and U.S. outlets later identified her as Mara Flávia Araujo, a 38-year-old Brazilian athlete and influencer. Her name also appears on the Montgomery County Medical Examiner’s website.

Ironman Texas said it was saddened by the death and sent condolences to the athlete’s family and friends, thanking first responders for their help. The organization said it would make no further comment out of respect for the family.

According to Ironman Texas, the race includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. The swim portion for women began around 6:31 a.m. CT on Saturday, and the Woodlands Fire Department later said crews were alerted around 7:30 a.m. about a possible missing swimmer in the lake.

The Chron reported that Araujo was recovered from the water around 9:30 a.m. CT and was pronounced dead. Officials said the case remains under investigation.
