2 teens dead, 10 injured in Texas apartment mass shooting, police say

Two people were killed and 10 others were injured in the Amarillo apartment shooting, according to police and local reports. The gathering started at another location, moved to the Westminster Apartments on South Coulter Street, and investigators said people who had been asked to leave the original party later followed attendees there and opened fire with a rifle-style weapon.

What police said

Amarillo police said the group involved included juveniles and young adults, and the shooting happened after the party shifted locations. Preliminary information indicates the suspects tried to enter an apartment before firing.

Reported details

Local reporting says the incident occurred around 1:58 a.m. on May 2 at the Westminster Apartments, and police have described it as an active investigation. One report also says no arrests had been made at the time of publication.

Two boys, ages 17 and 16, died in the shooting, police said. Ten people, whose ages weren’t listed, sustained injuries.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made, but investigators believe there are two suspects. Amarillo Police Chief Thomas Hover said investigators believe the suspects had an “affiliation with the targeted location” and one of the occupants at the party knew them.

Police recovered a Glock 9mm handgun on a nearby landing, but investigators believe suspects used multiple weapons based on cartridge casings recovered in an alley near the apartment complex.

Amarillo, a Texas Panhandle city of about 200,000 people, had 16 homicides in 2025, according to the police department. There have been 10 homicides, including the two teens killed, so far in 2026.
