President Donald Trump said he will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to rehear its recent ruling on birthright citizenship, a move legal experts say is highly unlikely to succeed.
Trump announced the decision after the court ruled against his effort to limit citizenship for most people born in the United States. He described the ruling as a setback and said he wants the justices to revisit the case.
However, such requests are rarely granted. The last time the Supreme Court approved a rehearing request after issuing a decision was in 1965, and the court has only once reversed itself after rehearing a case.
The move keeps Trump’s fight over birthright citizenship alive, but the odds of the court changing course appear extremely slim.
