Trump Slams Newsom’s UK Clean Energy Deal as ‘Inappropriate’ Amid Global Diplomacy Clash
President Donald Trump on Monday blasted California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s international outreach as “inappropriate,” warning British leaders against partnering with the Democratic governor.
Trump issued the rebuke after Newsom inked a clean energy agreement with the United Kingdom on a European diplomacy tour. “The U.K.’s got enough trouble without getting involved with Gavin Newscum,” Trump told Politico. He added that it was “inappropriate for them to be dealing with him.”

The comments followed Newsom’s prominent role at the Munich Security Conference, where he signed cooperation pacts with Ukraine and the UK while sharply critiquing Trump’s foreign policy. These steps are fueling talk of Newsom’s potential 2028 presidential run, a prospect long eyed by Democratic strategists.
At the summit, the second-term governor pitched California as a “stable and reliable” counter to Washington, assuring global attendees that the current administration is “temporary” and “gone in three years.”
A Newsom spokesperson fired back at Fox News Digital: “Donald Trump is on his knees for coal and Big Oil, selling out America’s future to China. Governor Newsom will continue to lead in his absence. Foreign leaders are rejecting Trump and choosing California’s vision for the future.”

Newsom’s sharpest barbs targeted world leaders cozying up to the 47th president. He accused them of “rolling over” for the White House, making themselves “look pathetic on the world stage.” Echoing a quip from January’s Davos World Economic Forum, he told reporters he “should have brought a bunch of knee pads” for allies bending to Trump’s “transactional” style—especially amid disputes over Arctic sovereignty and NATO funding.
“I can’t take this complicity of people rolling over,” Newsom said in a sideline event. “I mean, handing out crowns, the Nobel prizes that are being given away … it’s just pathetic.”
