Posted on May 7, 2026

Japan’s Nikkei 225 stock index closed at a record high above 62,000 on Thursday, achieving its largest single-day point gain ever of over 3,300 points.

Market Performance

The Nikkei rose 3,320.72 points, or 5.58%, to end at 62,833.84, after touching an intraday peak of 63,091.14. The broader Topix index climbed 111.76 points, or 3.00%, to 3,840.49.

Key Drivers

Gains were fueled by strong buying in heavyweight tech shares, particularly AI and semiconductor stocks like SoftBank Group, alongside optimism for a potential U.S.-Iran peace deal easing Middle East tensions. Markets reopened post-holidays, catching up with global rallies in technology sectors.
