Japan’s government panel has called for tighter age verification and feature restrictions on social media platforms to better protect children online, while ruling out a blanket age-based ban like those used in some other countries.
A draft report from the communications ministry said the aim is to reduce young people’s dependence on social media and limit its impact on their mental and physical health. The panel also noted growing concern over smartphones and social platforms, including risks linked to minors becoming involved in criminal activity.
Still, the panel said social media remains an important communication tool, making a total age ban inappropriate. Final details, including whether legal changes are needed, are expected to be decided by the Children and Families Agency when the report is formally submitted later this summer.
