‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Eric Dane’s cause of death revealed

The cause of death for Eric Dane, the beloved actor best known for playing the charming Dr. Mark Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has been officially confirmed. He was 53.

According to a copy of his death certificate obtained by USA Today, Dane died of respiratory failure on the afternoon of February 19 at a Los Angeles hospital, with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease — listed as the underlying cause. His wife of over two decades, Rebecca Gayheart, was named as the informant on the certificate.

The date carried a quiet, bittersweet significance: Dane passed away on the exact 20th anniversary of his first appearance on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

A Battle Fought Openly and Courageously

Dane had gone public with his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, and in the months that followed he became one of the condition’s most candid and visible advocates. In an October interview with the Washington Post, he spoke plainly about the physical toll the neurodegenerative disease was taking, revealing that he had missed the 20th anniversary celebration of “Grey’s Anatomy” at the 2025 Emmy Awards after a fall in his kitchen sent him to the hospital. “ALS is a nasty disease,” he said, noting that while castmates celebrated on the red carpet, he was getting stitches in his head.

Three weeks before his death, he was forced to withdraw from an ALS Network gala where he had been set to receive the Dean and Kathleen Rasmussen Advocate of the Year Award, with the organisation citing “the physical realities of living with ALS.”

His representative, Melissa Bank, confirmed his passing in a statement at the time, describing his final days as ones spent surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia. “He was determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the statement read.

A Legacy On and Off Screen

To audiences worldwide, Dane was McSteamy — the roguishly handsome plastic surgeon whose arrival at Seattle Grace sent shockwaves through the “Grey’s Anatomy” fandom. In more recent years, he brought an entirely different and deeply unsettling energy to HBO’s “Euphoria,” playing Cal Jacobs, the cold and controlling father at the centre of the show’s most disturbing family dynamics. He is set to reprise that role in the show’s highly anticipated third season, due to premiere on April 12 — a final performance his fans will now receive as a farewell.
