Four years on, why has Iran executed the man convicted of killing a police officer?

Posted on October 11, 2026

Iranian authorities have executed a man convicted of killing a police officer who was run over by a vehicle during clashes in 2022, the country’s judiciary announced on Sunday. The case dates back four years, and the sentence was carried out only after a full legal process, officials said.

Who was the victim?

The judiciary’s Mizan Online website cited local prosecutor Aref Akbari as confirming that the death sentence for the killer of Reza Ehterami had been carried out. Ehterami was a third lieutenant serving in Iran’s police emergency unit in the southern city of Bandar Abbas. He died in 2022 during clashes between police and fuel smugglers.

What happened to the defendant?

The man, known in court only as “Danial”, was convicted of intentionally killing Ehterami. According to earlier state media reports, the officer was run over by a vehicle driven by the defendant.

Akbari said the execution went ahead only after an investigation and trial, and that the Supreme Court upheld the verdict. The report did not say exactly when the sentence was carried out, and it gave no further details about the defendant.

Why were police clashing with fuel smugglers?

Fuel prices in oil-rich Iran remain among the lowest in the world. That has encouraged widespread smuggling of petrol to neighbouring countries, where it can be sold at far higher prices. Police regularly confront smugglers as part of efforts to curb the trade, and the 2022 clashes in Bandar Abbas were part of that wider problem.

Is Iran carrying out more executions?

The latest execution comes as Iran has ramped up its use of the death penalty. The country has carried out more executions since the outbreak of the Middle East war in February, and since anti-government protests erupted late last year.

Rights groups, including Amnesty International, say Iran executes more people every year than any other country except China. Capital punishment in Iran applies to a range of offences, including murder. Cases like this one, where the victim was a member of the security forces, are treated with particular seriousness by the authorities.

What does this case show?

The case illustrates how long the process can take in Iran’s courts. Ehterami died in 2022, and it took four years for the case to move through investigation, trial and appeal before the sentence was carried out. Officials have framed this as proof that due process was followed, noting the Supreme Court’s role in confirming the conviction.

At the same time, the execution adds to the growing number of death sentences carried out in the country at a time of regional conflict and domestic unrest. Rights groups have long raised concerns about the scale of Iran’s use of capital punishment, though the authorities defend it as a lawful penalty for serious crimes such as murder.

What happens next?

Iranian officials have not indicated any change in approach. With the country facing war-related pressures and continuing tensions at home, observers and rights organisations are likely to keep watching how many executions are carried out in the coming months.

For the family and colleagues of Reza Ehterami, the execution brings the legal process over his death to a close. For critics of capital punishment, it is another reminder of the pace at which Iran continues to carry out the death penalty.
