EFF Leader Malema Faces Up to 15-Year Sentence in Firearms Case

EFF Leader Malema Faces Up to 15-Year Sentence in Firearms Case

Posted on April 15, 2026

Julius Malema’s pre-sentencing hearing began Wednesday at the KuGompo City Magistrate’s Court in Eastern Cape, with proceedings expected to continue Thursday.

Convicted in October 2025 on five Firearms Control Act counts for firing a rifle into the air at a 2018 EFF rally in Mdantsane, the state seeks up to 15 years imprisonment.

A sentence exceeding 12 months without fine option would disqualify Malema from Parliament.
