China, Philippines Clash in South China Sea: Coast Guard Ship Rams Philippine Vessel Near Disputed Island

Posted on October 12, 2025

Tensions flared once again in the disputed South China Sea after a Chinese coast guard ship rammed a Philippine government vessel near Thitu Island (also called Pag-asa Island) in the Spratly Islands region on Sunday.

The Philippine Coast Guard reported that their ship, the BRP Datu Pagbuaya, was subjected to aggressive maneuvers by Chinese maritime forces, including repeated hits by water cannons followed by a deliberate ramming that caused minor structural damage. No injuries were reported among the Filipino crew. The incident occurred close to the area around Sandy Cay (Tiexian Reef), a contested coral reef claimed by both countries.

According to Manila, the Chinese actions represented an unjustified escalation and a clear threat to Philippine sovereignty in the area. The Philippines condemned the incident and affirmed its commitment to maintaining presence and asserting its rights in the region under international law.

Beijing meanwhile accused Philippine vessels of illegally entering Chinese-claimed waters and said the collision was the result of “dangerous approach” by the Filipino side. The Chinese Coast Guard maintained their operations were professional and lawful, blaming Manila for provoking the confrontation.

The South China Sea remains a flashpoint in Asia-Pacific geopolitics due to overlapping territorial claims by China, the Philippines, and other regional nations. The contentious waters are crucial for global shipping lanes, rich fishing grounds, and potential energy reserves, and episodes like this further heighten diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Manila.

International observers have expressed concern about the increasing frequency of such maritime incidents, calling for restraint and adherence to established maritime norms to prevent conflict escalation in the strategic waterway.
