Nine Killed, Ten Injured in South African Bar Shooting

Nearly a dozen gunmen opened fire outside a bar in South Africa early Sunday, leaving nine people dead and ten others injured in the country’s second mass shooting this month.

According to CBS News, the attack took place in Bekkersdal, a township about 28 miles west of Johannesburg. Witnesses said around 12 suspects arrived in a vehicle and began shooting outside the KwaNoxolo Tavern before fleeing the scene.

When the gunfire stopped, nine victims were confirmed dead, while ten others were rushed to nearby hospitals. Authorities have not released details on the survivors’ conditions. Police said some victims appeared to have been shot at random, and among the dead was a ride-share driver who had just dropped off a passenger.

The attackers were reportedly armed with several 9mm semi-automatic weapons and at least one AK-47, according to the Associated Press. Law enforcement has launched a manhunt to locate the perpetrators.

Earlier this month, another mass shooting at an unlicensed bar in Johannesburg claimed 12 lives and injured 13 others. Police have yet to determine whether the two attacks are connected.
