Kenya deported Somalia’s second deputy prime minister this week after authorities suspected he had fraudulently obtained a Kenyan passport, a police report said on Friday.
Jibril Abdirashid Haji arrived at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday afternoon carrying a Somali diplomatic passport and a valid visa. During immigration checks, officers grew suspicious that he had also acquired a Kenyan passport illegally, the report said.
According to the police, Haji admitted the allegation during questioning but refused to hand over the Kenyan passport when asked, saying he could only produce it in a court of law. He was detained in a VIP lounge at the airport and given a return ticket to Mogadishu. His flight departed early Thursday morning, the report said.
Kenya is home to a large Somali community and provides troops to peacekeeping operations in Somalia.
