Government Shutdown Enters Second-Longest Stretch as Senate Blocks GOP Funding Bill

The U.S. federal government shutdown extends into its 22nd day, now ranking as the second-longest in history, after the Senate failed to advance the Republican-led funding bill once again. The Senate vote fell 54-46 against invoking cloture to move forward with the House-passed measure aimed at funding the government through November 21.

The stalemate continues to furlough approximately 900,000 federal workers, with 2 million more working without pay, as essential government functions remain limited. Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley drew attention by delivering a more than 22-hour speech on the Senate floor, protesting President Donald Trump’s administration amid the shutdown crisis. Some Democratic senators crossed party lines to support the funding bill, but opposition remains strong.

Efforts to resolve the deadlock over federal spending priorities have repeatedly failed, leaving millions affected and government services impaired. As negotiations stall, Washington braces for continued uncertainty in the coming weeks.
