Georgetown’s Ed Cooley Suspended One Game After Tossing Water Bottle Into Stands
Georgetown men’s basketball coach Ed Cooley has been suspended for one game after an incident in which he threw a water bottle into the stands, reportedly striking a child, following the team’s loss to Xavier on Saturday night.
In a statement released Sunday, Georgetown athletic director Lee Reed announced the suspension, emphasizing that Cooley’s behavior did not meet the program’s expectations. “I met with Coach Cooley today to discuss the incident which occurred after last night’s game against Xavier,” Reed said. “I expressed that his conduct did not align with the standards we expect of our coaches, nor does it reflect the values of Georgetown Athletics or Georgetown University.”
As a result, Cooley will sit out the Hoyas’ next matchup against Coppin State, with associate head coach Jeff Battle stepping in to lead the team.
The incident occurred at the conclusion of Georgetown’s 84–77 road loss to Xavier, marking another frustrating moment in what has been a challenging season for the Hoyas under Cooley’s first year at the helm. The school has not released further details regarding the individual who was struck, though reports indicate the child was not seriously injured.
Georgetown officials say the program considers the matter resolved and has emphasized its commitment to sportsmanship and accountability.
