A North Carolina emergency physician has been arrested after allegedly shooting into a Jeep during a road rage incident on Interstate 77 in Virginia, injuring two sisters, state police said.
Dr. Richard Thomas Arriviello, 61, of Charlotte, was driving north in a Mercedes-Benz at about 8:50 a.m. on Aug. 22 when the shooting occurred roughly three miles north of the North Carolina-Virginia border, according to Virginia State Police.
Investigators said Arriviello allegedly fired at the moving Jeep, striking a 12-year-old girl and her 20-year-old sister in the legs. Both victims were airlifted to a hospital with injuries police said were not life-threatening.
Authorities said Arriviello fled the scene in his Mercedes-Benz but was stopped by troopers about 15 miles away and taken into custody.
He faces several felony charges, including malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, maliciously causing bodily injury with intent to maim, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Arriviello was being held without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 29, officials said.
Police have not disclosed what led to the alleged confrontation or whether a firearm was recovered from Arriviello’s vehicle. The Jeep’s driver was cited for reckless driving but was not identified by authorities.
North Carolina Medical Board records show Arriviello has held an emergency medicine license in the state since 2010, with no public disciplinary actions listed. The records also identify him as the owner of Family Urgent Care in Monroe.
