Argentina’s President Javier Milei Joins Trump in Boycotting G20 Summit in Johannesburg

Argentina’s President Javier Milei has officially decided to withdraw from the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for November 22-23, 2025, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This move aligns with U.S. President Donald Trump’s boycott of the event, which Trump justified by alleging human rights abuses in South Africa—a claim South African authorities have strongly disputed.

Milei’s absence signals a political statement of support for Trump and a diplomatic slight toward the summit’s host country, the first African nation to host a G20 summit.

Instead of Milei, Argentina will be represented by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and G20 sherpa Federico Pinedo.

The decision reflects Milei’s broader foreign policy approach, closely aligned with Washington, especially after Argentina recently secured a substantial financial lifeline from the U.S. Treasury.

Though some Argentine diplomatic officials believe Milei’s presence at the G20 would benefit the country by maintaining historical and emerging international ties, his boycott symbolizes a more radical and libertarian stance against multilateral engagement.

The move has stirred mixed reactions on social media, with critics highlighting Argentina’s economic challenges, including hyperinflation, while supporters praise Milei’s leadership style and priorities
