Widespread Gas Leak in Ube City Causes Multiple Small Fires, Supply Cut to Thousands
Yamaguchi – Ube City in Yamaguchi Prefecture experienced a widespread gas leak caused by malfunctioning pressure-regulating equipment in the city’s gas supply system. The abnormal pressure led to excessive gas flow in some areas, sparking 7 to 12 small fires which were quickly extinguished.
Authorities responded by shutting off gas supply to over 12,000 households to prevent further hazards. Residents were urged to close their valves and await inspections before gas service can safely resume. One minor injury was reported, with no serious casualties.
Investigations into the cause of the equipment failure are ongoing as safety checks continue. The incident highlights the critical importance of maintenance and rapid emergency response in urban gas systems.
