Texas vs Texas Tech Softball 2025 College World Series: Championship Showdown Preview

OKLAHOMA CITY — The 2025 Women’s College World Series (WCWS) is reaching a thrilling climax as the Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders prepare to face off in the national championship series, marking a landmark moment for both programs.

Texas Tech, making its first-ever appearance in the WCWS finals, secured a dramatic 3-2 walk-off victory over the four-time defending champions Oklahoma Sooners on Monday night. Lauren Allred’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning sealed the win, eliminating Oklahoma and ending their dominant era under coach Patty Gasso, who led them to seven championships in the last eleven years.

The Red Raiders took an early 2-0 lead with key hits and relied on standout pitcher NiJaree Canady, who struck out seven and allowed just three hits until the final inning rally by Oklahoma fell short.

Meanwhile, Texas advanced to the finals with a 2-0 shutout over Tennessee earlier Monday. The Longhorns’ pitching duo of Mac Morgan and Teagan Kavan combined to stifle Tennessee’s offense, with Morgan delivering four strong innings and Kavan closing out three hitless innings. Katie Stewart’s solo home run in the fourth inning provided the decisive run, while Texas capitalized on a Tennessee error to add an insurance run. This victory marks Texas’ third trip to the WCWS finals in four years, as they seek to overcome previous championship losses to Oklahoma in 2022 and 2024.

The championship series begins Wednesday, June 4, at 8 p.m. ET, broadcast on ESPN. Texas Tech needs just one win to claim its first national title, while Texas aims to add a second championship under coach Mike White. The matchup is highly anticipated, as Texas Tech’s Cinderella run and Texas’ consistent excellence promise a fiercely competitive finale to this year’s tournament.

This historic all-Texas championship highlights the strength and depth of collegiate softball in the state, with Texas Tech’s breakthrough performance and Texas’ resilience setting the stage for a memorable conclusion to the 2025 Women’s College World Series.
