After giving birth at home, a 24-year-old woman was arrested for burying her newborn daughter in the snow.

A 24-year-old woman has been taken into custody by police in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, on suspicion of killing her newborn daughter by burying her in snow.

Police say temp worker Tsunami Sato is accused of burying the baby in snow on January 11 between 6:40 and 7:30 a.m., according to NTV.

A woman who was not dressed appropriately for the cold weather was acting suspiciously, according to a witness who saw Sato and called the police.

When police arrived on the scene, they discovered the baby girl unconscious. After being transported to a hospital in Sendai City, her acute circulatory failure was determined to be the cause of her death.

Sato was also taken to the hospital due to poor health, but was released on Monday, at which point she was questioned and arrested.

Police said Sato has denied intent to kill and quoted her as saying, “I definitely hid the baby in the snow, but I was in a panic and didn’t think she would die.”

Police said Sato lived with her parents who were apparently unaware that she was pregnant. No information was released about who the father of the child was.
