Singapore founder’s son claims he has been given political refuge in the United Kingdom.
Former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s estranged brother, Lee Hsien Yang, declared on Tuesday that he is now a “political refugee” after the U.K. government granted him asylum due to what he alleged was persecution at home.
The founding father of modern-day Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, is the father of the Lee brothers. Lee Hsien Yang has accused Singapore’s government of harassing him, his wife, and his son in a public dispute that began in 2017 over the late patriarch’s family property.
He said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that he applied for asylum in 2022 “as a last resort.”
The assaults on me by the Singaporean government are well known. They started a false police investigation that has been going on for years, prosecuted my kid, and disciplined my wife,” he stated. “On the basis of these facts, the U.K. has determined that I face a well-founded risk of persecution and cannot safely return to Singapore.”
“I remain a Singapore citizen and hope that someday it will become safe to return home,” he stated.
In a Tuesday interview with The Guardian, Lee Hsien Yang vehemently denounced the Singaporean government and said it enabled money laundering.
People need to look beyond Singapore’s bold, false assertions and see what the reality really is like,” he was quoted as saying. “There is a need for the world to look more closely, to see Singapore’s role as that key facilitator for arms trades, for dirty money, for drug monies, crypto money.”
The Singapore government said in a statement there was no basis to the allegations in the Guardian’s report. The city-state has a “robust system to deter and tackle money laundering and other illicit financial flows, which is consistent with international standards,” it said.
“In Singapore, no one is above the law. Anyone, including the offspring of the founding prime minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, can be investigated and brought before the courts,” it added.
Their eldest brother, Lee Hsien Yang, and his sister, Lee Wei Ling, who passed away earlier this month, accuse him of misusing his position of authority to prevent them from tearing down the family mansion in accordance with their father’s wishes. Their father passed away in 2015 after controlling Singapore for more than thirty years.
Due to accusations that they had given fraudulent testimony in court procedures involving Lee Kuan Yew’s will, Lee Hsien Yang and his wife became embroiled in government investigations as part of the family conflict.
After twenty years at the top, Lee Hsien Loong resigned in May. Although he currently serves as a senior minister in the Cabinet, he delegated authority to his deputy, Lawrence Wong.
When questioned about Lee Hsien, the UK Home Office did not immediately respond.
