UN Security Council Backs Trump Peace Plan for Gaza in Diplomatic Breakthrough

The United Nations Security Council on Monday unanimously approved a U.S.-drafted resolution endorsing President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan for Gaza, marking a major diplomatic advance toward stabilizing the region and rebuilding after two years of conflict.

The resolution authorizes the deployment of an international stabilization force in Gaza, tasked with ensuring border security, demilitarizing the territory by decommissioning Hamas’s weapons, and facilitating reconstruction under a newly created transitional governance Board of Peace. The force will work alongside Israel, Egypt, and a newly trained Palestinian police force to maintain order.

While the original Trump plan focused primarily on ceasefire and reconstruction, the Security Council’s adapted text includes language about paving a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood, contingent on reforms by the Palestinian Authority and progress in Gaza’s redevelopment.

The resolution passed with 13 votes in favor, with Russia and China abstaining. It received support from Arab and Islamic nations including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and Jordan, and was welcomed by the Palestinian Authority. However, Hamas has rejected the resolution, denouncing it as foreign imposition and vowing to resist disarmament.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced opposition to establishing a Palestinian state but reaffirmed his commitment to demilitarizing Gaza “the easy way or the hard way.”

The resolution signals a rare moment of international consensus, aiming to transition Gaza from conflict to recovery, though significant challenges remain in enforcing disarmament and securing lasting peace.
