South Africa: Mamelodi Man Gets Life imprisonment for Murdering Mom, Faking Intruder Story
A 25-year-old Mamelodi resident, Prince Amukelani Maluleka, received a life sentence in the Pretoria High Court for killing his 56-year-old mother, Renolda Maluleka.
On October 11, 2022, Maluleka spun conflicting tales to his cousin about her death—first claiming suicide, then blaming an intruder. The cousin discovered him beside her bloodied body and promptly alerted police, leading to his on-scene arrest.
Despite pleading not guilty and insisting an intruder was responsible, State Prosecutor Vusimuzi Tshabalala delivered damning evidence, including family testimonies, that sealed his conviction beyond doubt.
Defence Bid Fails Amid No Remorse
Maluleka’s lawyers sought leniency from the mandatory life term, pointing to his youth, clean record, and time in custody. The State pushed back hard: Tshabalala stressed Maluleka’s lack of remorse, prior threats of household death, and that first-offender status doesn’t warrant exceptions.
The court heard of the family’s irreversible emotional scars, with Renolda’s children and siblings voicing profound trauma and confusion over the motive. Tshabalala invoked South Africa’s gender-based violence (GBV) crisis, urging a deterrent sentence.
Judges concurred: Maluleka showed zero regret for the brutal crime, justifying the full life term.
