Ghana: Where are we heading as a nation?” – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Condemns ‘Impunity of Arrests’ in Ghana
Former Majority Leader and Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has voiced strong condemnation over the rising wave of what he describes as the “impunity of arrests” by Ghana’s state security agencies. His comments come amid ongoing investigations under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative led by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Addressing the public, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu raised serious concerns about the arbitrary detentions of several prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, and former government ministers. He lamented that many detained individuals are being forced to report weekly to security agencies without formal charges or court appearances, signaling a worrying disregard for due process.
“What message are we sending to our citizens and the world?” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu asked, questioning the trajectory of the nation in light of these actions.
He further decried the seizure of property such as vehicles linked to these individuals without following legal protocols. The former lawmaker urged President John Dramani Mahama to address these issues in his upcoming State of the Nation Address, calling for respect for human rights and the rule of law.
The former Majority Leader’s remarks underline growing concerns among political circles about the methods used in the anti-corruption campaign, emphasizing that justice must be upheld through transparent and fair procedures.
As Ghana grapples with efforts to recover stolen public funds, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s call highlights the need for balance between accountability and respect for civil liberties.
