British Tourist Faces 2 Years in UAE Prison for Filming Missile Strike in Dubai

A 60-year-old British tourist from London has been arrested in Dubai and charged with a cybercrime after filming Iranian missiles hitting the city, facing up to two years in prison.

Detained on Monday night, March 9, the man deleted the video when asked by authorities and claimed he had no intent to break the law. He’s been charged alongside 20 others for videos and social media posts related to recent Iranian missile strikes on the UAE, according to campaign group Detained in Dubai.

The charge: “broadcasting, publishing, republishing or circulating rumours or provocative propaganda that could disturb public security.” He was held at Bur Dubai police station following his arrest.

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, warned: “Under UAE cybercrime laws, one post can lead to many arrests. Anyone who shares, reposts, or comments on the same content can face the same charges. The charges are vague and broad, but serious—those charged could face lengthy prison sentences. Residents could also be detained under national security laws, held indefinitely, denied embassy access, and subjected to human rights abuses. In times of tension, extreme caution is advised.”

Dubai heavily polices social media, especially amid the conflict. The government has threatened jail for sharing information that “incites panic.” Early videos of drone and missile strikes circulated widely but have vanished, replaced by posts praising the authorities.

The emirate faces ongoing Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting US allies. On Thursday, fresh strikes hit: a hotel fire in Creek Harbour early morning, a building on Sheikh Zayed Road around noon, and an incident in Al Bada district.

UAE laws strictly prohibit criticizing or insulting the government or causing “reputational harm,” with penalties up to £200,000 fines, five years in prison, and deportation.
