Billionaire Heir Timothy Mellon Unmasked as Secret $130M Donor to Trump for Military Pay During Shutdown

Timothy Mellon, a reclusive billionaire heir to a prominent American banking and railroad dynasty, has been revealed as the anonymous donor who contributed $130 million to pay U.S. military personnel during the ongoing federal government shutdown. The New York Times disclosed Mellon’s identity on Saturday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Mellon, described by President Donald Trump as a “great patriot” and “friend,” made the donation to help cover service members’ salaries and benefits amid the pay gap caused by the shutdown. The Pentagon has officially accepted the funds under its general gift acceptance authority, ensuring troops continue to receive their paychecks.

Known for his substantial financial support of Trump campaigns, including a $50 million contribution to a pro-Trump super PAC in 2024, Mellon has largely maintained a low public profile. At age 83, he is the grandson of former Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon and is estimated to be worth around $14 billion.

The donation has sparked legal and ethical debates, with experts questioning its compliance with the Antideficiency Act that forbids federal agencies from spending beyond congressional appropriations or accepting voluntary services. Critics argue the government should be funded by official congressional appropriations rather than private donors.

While the generous gift provides relief to military members, the amount equates to about $100 per service member and does not significantly alter the Pentagon’s financial challenges, as the 2025 budget request includes approximately $600 billion for military compensation.

The White House has declined to comment further, and attempts to reach Mellon or his representatives for direct comments have been unsuccessful. The billionaire also reportedly has ties to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to whose presidential campaign he contributed in 2024.

This unprecedented private donation underscores the unusual measures taken during the government shutdown and highlights ongoing tensions in military funding and political financing.
