Greater Manchester Police confirmed the legendary fighter was found dead at his home in England early Sunday morning, adding his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Tributes flooded in for Hatton, one of Britain’s most beloved boxing icons. Former champ Amir Khan wrote, “Today we lost not only one of Britain’s greatest boxers, but a friend, a mentor, a warrior.

Ricky Hatton, former world boxing champion and one of Britain’s most beloved fighters, has died at the age of 46. Hatton was found deceased early Sunday morning at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester. Police have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Hatton, known as “The Hitman,” was a prolific and dynamic boxer who won multiple world titles in the light-welterweight and welterweight divisions during a professional career spanning from 1997 to 2012. He earned global recognition for his aggressive style, thrilling fans worldwide, and memorable victories, including his 2005 win over Kostya Tszyu that earned him the IBF light-welterweight title.

Although Hatton retired in 2012, he had announced plans for a comeback fight in December 2025 in Dubai against Eisa Al Dah. Beyond the ring, Hatton was open about his struggles with mental health and addiction, sharing his battles with depression and substance abuse after stepping away from professional boxing.

Following retirement, Hatton remained involved in boxing as a coach, passing on his expertise to the next generation of fighters.

Greater Manchester Police stated: “Officers were called to Bowlacre Road, Hyde, at 6:45 a.m. where they located the body of a 46-year-old man. There are currently no indications of suspicious circumstances.”
