South Africa: ‘I underestimated Zuma’: ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba admits shock over MK Party impact in 2025 elections

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has publicly admitted underestimating former president Jacob Zuma and his newly established uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party following the 2025 South African elections. The MK Party, associated with Zuma, made significant electoral gains, capturing 14.58% of the national vote and securing 58 seats in the National Assembly, positioning itself as a powerful new force and official opposition in the political landscape.

Mashaba expressed surprise at the MK Party’s success which caught many political observers off guard, including his own party ActionSA. Despite ActionSA’s hopes to enter parliament for the first time, Mashaba acknowledged the MK Party’s unexpected influence, which has undoubtedly reshaped the post-election power dynamics. He also welcomed the fact that the dominant African National Congress (ANC) no longer retains an outright majority, signaling a shift towards a more contested parliamentary environment.

The MK Party’s rise reflects deepening political fragmentation and a realignment of voter support, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, where it holds considerable strength. Meanwhile, ActionSA continues to campaign as an alternative to the traditional political giants, pressing for ethical leadership, economic prosperity, and non-racial governance.

This development sets the stage for a dynamic and unpredictable political environment as parties vie for influence ahead of the next local government elections.
