Smoke and fire shoots can be seen all over the Las Vegas valley.
A fire in central Las Vegas shot smoke into the air visible across the Las Vegas valley on Friday.
Smoke was seen shooting into the air. Details on the blaze weren’t immediately available, but the fire appeared to be coming from an area near the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Witnesses on the ground reported that the smoke appeared to be emanating from behind the UNLV student union. The building involved is a two-story commercial building, and the blaze appeared to have started on the second floor. That building appears to have several retail stores, including a nail salon, a cafe, and a post office.
Las Vegas firefighters were responding to the fire on Friday morning.
Just before 8:40 a.m., UNLV published the following on X:
“Avoid Maryland Parkway near University Rd due to Clark County working an active fire. There is no current threat to UNLV campus.”
A news conference from fire officials is expected just before 9:30 a.m., it will be available via live stream on this page.
Just after 9 a.m., UNLV officials said the fire had been contained by Clark County Firefighters. They reiterated that there is no threat to the UNLV campus and noted that Maryland Parkway is closed between Harmon Avenue and University Road. Commuters are advised to avoid the area.
