Colombian Gold Miners Rescued After 18 Hours Trapped Underground

Eighteen gold miners were safely rescued on Friday after being trapped underground for nearly 18 hours at the El Minón mine in Remedios, Antioquia. The miners became trapped following a mechanical failure that caused a collapse inside the unlicensed mine, blocking their main exit and halting operations.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly for over 12 hours to clear debris and secure a safe passage for the trapped workers. All eighteen miners emerged in good health, greeted by cheers, hugs, and energy drinks from rescuers and colleagues waiting anxiously at the surface.

Authorities confirmed that the accident was caused by a structural collapse that prevented landslides but also trapped the miners inside. No casualties have been reported

The incident highlights ongoing safety challenges in Colombia’s mining sector, particularly in smaller, informal operations. Mining accidents remain a significant concern in the region, where oversight and regulation are limited.

Rescue officials are investigating the mine’s safety standards and will review the conditions that led to the collapse. Meanwhile, the community celebrated the safe return of the miners after a tense night underground.
