Air India Ahmedabad Plane Crash – Latest Updates, Causes, and Impact
When Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner headed for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, it carried 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, and crashed into the residential quarters of doctors from BJ Medical College in the Meghaninagar area, causing a catastrophic loss of life and extensive destruction on June 12, 2025, in Ahmedabad, India.
At least 246 people died in the crash, including five medical students who were inside the building where the plane crashed.
Vishwaskumar Ramesh, a passenger who is presently in the hospital, was the only confirmed survivor. His survival, according to his brother, was a “miracle,” but many others, including his sibling, have not been found.
169 Indians, 53 Britons, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese citizens were among the dead.
Numerous people who lived in the doctors’ hostel and the surrounding apartments were hurt and are currently being treated at nearby hospitals.
Crash Details and Immediate Response
Shortly after taking off at 13:38 local time, the plane lost altitude, colliding with the apartment building and catching fire.
Witnesses reported seeing thick black smoke rising from the scene and hearing a huge explosion. The building was reduced to ruins, and bodies and debris were strewn all over the place.
Police, ambulances, and several fire engines were among the emergency services that arrived in a matter of minutes. Six teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were sent in to help with recovery and rescue efforts.
Rescue efforts were severely hindered by the intense fire, which was fueled by about 125,000 liters of jet fuel.
Authorities are working to identify victims and assist survivors as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
