A Step Towards Peace: The Israeli Security Cabinet Approves a Cease-Fire Agreement with Gaza

The ceasefire deal calls for a six-week pause in fighting, the gradual release of 33 hostages that Hamas has held, the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israel, and more aid for Gaza. It is anticipated that during this first stage, talks for a long-term solution to the conflict will start.

The ceasefire agreement calls for a six-week break in hostilities, the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israel, the gradual release of 33 hostages held by Hamas, and increased aid for Gaza. It is expected that negotiations for a lasting resolution to the conflict will begin during this initial phase.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that the deal aligns with the war’s objectives, but some cabinet members expressed dissent. Notably, Itamar Ben-Gvir, a hardline minister, threatened to resign if the agreement is enacted, indicating potential instability within Netanyahu’s coalition

The broader Israeli cabinet is scheduled to meet later on January 17 to discuss ratification of the deal, with hopes that the ceasefire could commence by January 19. However, ongoing Israeli airstrikes have continued to result in casualties in Gaza even after the announcement of the ceasefire

Despite optimism surrounding the ceasefire, humanitarian organizations have raised alarms about the dire conditions in Gaza. Reports indicate that many civilians continue to suffer from lack of basic necessities and ongoing military actions
