Cape Town cops on the hunt for detainee who escaped through roof of prison transport van

A detainee who escaped during transit to Pollsmoor prison is being sought by Cape Town police. According to reports, the man got out of the prison transport vehicle he was riding in by climbing through the roof.

Officers in Muizenberg reported an escape from lawful custody after “a detainee allegedly escaped through the roof of the prisoners’ truck whilst en route to Pollsmoor prison” on Thursday at approximately 16:05, according to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie.

The public’s observation of the detainee running away set off the alarm.

“People in the community informed the truck’s driver about the escape attempt close to a railroad crossing in Muizenberg. After securing the roof with his companion, the driver checked the detainees at Pollsmoor.

Pojie added that the escapee, identified as Shepart Chfutuku, had been detained on a robbery charge in Gordon’s Bay in October.

“We appeal to anyone with information about the whereabouts of the escapee, Shepart Chfutuku, to contact crime Stop at 08600 10111,” said Pojie.

Police insiders told News24 that the man appears to live in Khayelitsha, but could be in hiding in Mfuleni or Nyanga.

It is believed that the man is linked to a syndicate of armed robbers who target supermarkets and retail stores around Cape Town. more about these story visit news24.com
