Nevada Indicts Nathan Chasing Horse Again on Several Sexual Abuse Charges

Renowned for his portrayal as Smiles A Lot in the movie “Dances with Wolves,” Nathan Chasing Horse has been charged with numerous counts of sexual abuse in Nevada.

This latest indictment, which was made public on October 31, 2024, contains felony charges for creating and having materials that portray child sexual abuse18 in addition to 21 counts of sexual assault, lewd behavior, and kidnapping.

This comes after the Nevada Supreme Court ruled in September that Chasing Horse’s prior indictment was dismissed but that fresh charges may be brought.

The prosecution was chastised by the judge for abusing the grand jury procedure. Although Chasing Horse’s lawyer has maintained that the exchanges were voluntary, one of the charges concerns a victim who was less than 16 at the time of the alleged abuse, which is below Nevada’s age of consent

Since his capture in January 2023, Chasing Horse has been detained. He is charged of establishing a cult and marrying minors18 by taking advantage of his status as a self-described Lakota medicine man to win the confidence of weak Indigenous women and girls. Because of the case’s consequences for Indigenous communities and the persistent problems with human trafficking and exploitation of Native women, it has attracted a lot of attention.
