South Africa will cancel the IDs of beauty queens.

South Africa said that a South African beauty queen who is currently competing for Nigeria in the next Miss Universe contest will have her identity documents revoked.

The action is the most recent development in the continuing conflict around South African and Nigerian native Chidimma Adetshina.

Adetshina faced anti-foreigner sentiment in South Africa

Adetshina, who was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a South African-citizen mother of Mozambique descent, encountered criticism when she attempted to enter the Miss South Africa contest.

Because of her mixed identity, the 23-year-old was the target of xenophobic assaults, including charges that she was not South African and condemnation from government authorities.

She retracted her participation in the beauty pageant due to the scandal, citing her and her family’s “safety and wellbeing.”

Her mother may have stolen a South African woman’s identity in order to get South African citizenship, according to the South African authorities, which attempted to look into the situation.

Adetshina and her mother have till Monday to demonstrate their case for maintaining their national identification documents, Home Affairs Director General Tommy Makhode told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday.

“We have not received any response and therefore the department will be proceeding with the withdrawal of those documents in line with the Identification Act,” Makhode said.
