House of Reps Member Ikwechegh Docked, Gets N500,000 Bail
Mascot, Alex After being arrested for allegedly attacking Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, Ikwechegh, a member of the Abia State House of Representatives, was given bail of N500,000.
After a delivery argument became violent, the event happened at Ikwechegh’s home in Abuja on October 27, 2024. During the altercation, the driver said that Ikwechegh repeatedly slapped him and tore his clothes.
When Abuwatseya demanded money for delivering snails that Ikwechegh had ordered, the confrontation started. According to reports, the congressman refused to pay since the driver had shown rudeness. Ikwechegh’s violent actions and threats against the driver, including assertions that he could “make this man disappear” with no repercussions, were captured on a video of the event that went viral on social media.
The public’s reaction to the video’s distribution was so strong that the House of Representatives decided to look into Ikwechegh’s actions. Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere stressed the need of accountability and preserving the integrity of the legislative body at a plenary session. Later, Ikwechegh apologized to the House and the general public, admitting that his behavior was improper and expressing sorrow.
