As a Puerto Rico “joke” backfires on Trump, Bad Bunny gives Harris a lift.
While comparing her strategy with that of former President Donald Trump, Vice President Harris was in Philadelphia on Sunday pitching a fresh vow to assist Puerto Rico’s economy when her opponent’s rally in fresh York gave her message some unexpected traction.
Puerto Rico was referred to as a “floating island of garbage” by a comic warming up the audience at Trump’s event at Madison Square Garden, which infuriated Boricuas everywhere and increased support for Harris’ message.
Other Puerto Rican musicians followed suit after megastar Bad Bunny shared Harris’ Puerto Rico commitment with his 45 million Instagram followers.
Puerto Ricans living on the island don’t get to vote in the presidential election. But Boricuas living on the mainland do – and in Pennsylvania, a pivotal state in this year’s race, they wield significant clout.
The majority of Pennsylvania’s 580,000 Latino voters are Puerto Rican, according to UCLA’s Latino Policy and Politics Institute.
Harris visited Philadelphia’s Puerto Rican staple, Freddy and Tony’s Restaurant, on Sunday. In a previous video message that was recorded directly to camera, she had declared that, should she win the election, she will establish a new Puerto Rico Opportunity Task Force.
Harris promised to fix the island’s shaky electrical system and stated that the federal government will collaborate with the business sector and island officials to develop methods to increase employment there.
This joke bombed for a reason. It's not funny and it's not true. Puerto Ricans are amazing people and amazing Americans! I’ve been to the island many times. It’s a beautiful place. Everyone should visit! I will always do whatever I can to help any Puerto Rican in Florida or on… https://t.co/b00eYWkx85
