Deadliest Day in Lebanon: Israeli Airstrikes Kill 492 Amid Escalating Conflict with Hezbollah”
At least 492 people died as a consequence of Israeli bombings on Lebanon on September 23, 2024, making it the worst day of bloodshed since the Lebanese civil war of 1975–1990. The health ministry of Lebanon has recorded over 1,600 injuries, with 35 children and 58 women among the deaths.
The Israeli military claimed to have destroyed major terrorist infrastructure2 when it hit some 1,300 Hezbollah locations in southern and eastern Lebanon.
This is the latest in a string of deadly clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah that grew more intense following Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, which also involved Hezbollah.
Hezbollah launched missiles into northern Israel in retaliation for the airstrikes, however there were no early reports of injuries from these attacks.
Tens of thousands of people have been forced to escape from southern Lebanon into Beirut as a result of the situation. Concerning the conflict’s humanitarian effects, the United Nations and other world leaders have voiced serious worries that it may turn into a larger regional conflict.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that if fighting keeps getting worse, Lebanon would end up “another Gaza.”
Both sides are firmly established in their positions as the conflict continues, with Israel promising to carry out military operations against Hezbollah in an attempt to change the security situation along its northern border.
