Germany looks into potential water supply disruption at military installation
Two NATO military outposts in Germany have had their water supply suspected of being sabotaged, leading to their closure. The bases in question are major military sites that are situated in Cologne and Geilenkirchen, both significant military installations.
Early on Wednesday morning, a guard noticed a gap in the fence near the barracks’ water processing plant. This prompted a search of the area, but no trespassers were found, according to a news statement from the Territorial Command.
The drinking-water system had anomalous levels, thus the water supply was cut off,” the statement stated.
The base, which employs 1,200 civilians in addition to 4,300 soldiers, reopened in the afternoon.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his ministers fly on a fleet of military planes based there.
Water will be provided to the barracks via canister until test results are received.
Following the event in Cologne, a NATO installation in neighboring Geilenkirchen, which is home to the alliance’s fleet of AWACS surveillance aircraft, increased security but did not block entry. READ MORE
