At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Anraku Sorato, Adam Ondra, and Alberto Gines advance to the Boulder and Lead final.
In Paris 2024, Anraku Sorato led the way to qualify for the men’s Boulder and Lead final, while Olympic champion Alberto Ginés López and veteran climber Adam Ondra also advanced.
After climbing the challenging 15-meter Lead wall on Wednesday, August 7, the standings were significantly altered from Monday’s Boulder round.
With just eight competitors making it to the championship round, world number one Anraku who is only 17 demonstrated why he is the man to beat with a total score of 137.0, while Ginés López (100.7) and Colin Duffy (87.9) of the USA surged up the standings to advance.
Toby Roberts, the second-ranked player in the world for Team GB, finished second with impressive results. He will be joined in the final by fellow countryman Hamish McArthur (79.3). Ondra (116.6), who placed third overall, demonstrated his qualifications to try and win an Olympic gold.
Jakob Schubert of Austria (98.8) and Paul Jenft, the French hopeful (91.1), have qualified for Friday, August 9th’s final.
Most of the early climbers on Wednesday knew they would need to score high to challenge the top eight, out of a total of 20 competitors, after Monday’s Boulder semi-finals.
McArthur of Team GB, who took home the Lead bronze at the 2021 world championships, improved his chances with a 45.1 for an overall combined score of 79.3.
McArthur’s lead was short-lived, as Ginés López, the reigning Olympic champion from Spain, enthralled the spectators with the highest score of the morning (72.0).
Despite appearing to be well enough to qualify for the final with an overall score of 100.7, 21.4 points better than McArthur, Ginés López still had a nervous wait with 12 climbers left.
