Family reports a 20-year-old died at Yosemite’s Half Dome after falling from “unnecessarily dangerous” cables.
Drawing comparisons between the Half Dome cables and past trekking experiences, Rohloff issued a warning. He claimed to have completed several walks around Arizona with his daughter, including the state’s highest peak, Humphreys Peak. He said that they went on a couple annual hikes through the Grand Canyon.
Yosemite’s website states that the Half Dome cables were put in place in 1919. The system is made up of wooden boards positioned in between each pair of posts and long metal cables that are supported by posts that are fastened to the rock.
There aren’t many things as difficult as trekking the Grand Canyon. Although Yosemite’s overall path is not physically harder than the Grand Canyon, Rohloff claimed that the cable system is needlessly risky.
He said there weren’t many irregularities on the smooth granite surface to provide grip for feet. There were no side boards or harnesses fastened to the cables; the wooden planks were spaced around ten feet apart.
I believe that descending the wires in any amount of water is a disaster waiting to happen “.
Grace Rohloff captained many sports teams and was salutatorian of her class in high school. She had recently finished her second year at Arizona State University and was on target to earn her bachelor’s degree in two and a half years. Her alma institution, Valley Lutheran High School, was to be her student teacher.
