The feast of Yom kippur is a day of atonement,the 10th day of Tishri is a day of fasting and affliction.
This day is set apart by YAHWEH for us to humble ourselves with fasting and prayers. It is a day we ask for YAHWEH’S Mercy and forgiveness for ourselves and the nation of Israel once in a year. Let 16:29-34.
This day of atonement is a shabbath day of fasting,No work is allowed and no food or water (total fast) lev 23:31-32.
According to tradition, it is on Yom Kippur that YAHWEH decides each person’s fate, so Jews are encouraged to make amends and ask forgiveness for sins committed during the past year. The holiday is observed with a 25-hour fast and a special religious service.
The white clothing is a symbol for purity on the day of Yom Kippur. The Jewish people must partake in the wearing of white to show also their participation of the ritual. The Shofar is a very important piece in contributing to the ritual of Yom Kippur. It symbolizes the end of fasting and end of Yom Kippur.
Judaism teaches that because humans have been given free will, they are responsible for their own actions. If they commit an action which is wrong, then they must seek forgiveness. Forgiveness can only be accepted from the victim. Jews place great emphasis on teshuva , or repentance.
