Ghana: Jomoro MP Reveals Father’s Polygamous Family Background: ‘My Father Married 16 Wives and Fathered 26 Children’

Dorcas Affo-Toffey, the Member of Parliament for Jomoro Constituency and Deputy Minister of Transport, has shared a personal insight into her large extended family, revealing that her father married 16 wives and fathered 26 children.

In an interview, Hon. Affo-Toffey recounted how her father, a wealthy man with deep respect for women, embraced polygamy as part of their cultural heritage. She explained that her father disapproved of any secret relationships and believed in marriage as a formal commitment. This was exemplified in how he approached her mother’s marriage by openly informing her grandparents of his intentions.

Despite the numerous wives and children, Affo-Toffey described the family as living peacefully with mutual respect and love among all members. As one of the youngest in this extended family, she is proud of the values her father upheld.

This revelation comes as a reflection of traditional family structures still present in some parts of Ghana, highlighting the complexity and diversity of family life in the country.
